- There are times when you discover you have a problem you never thought
- about when you upgrade software in the most unlikely places. In my
- case, I was trying to find a better version of the PPP software my
- Macintosh uses to connect with my ISP, so I downloaded FreePPP 1.0.5 and
- installed it.
-
- One of the advantages of FreePPP 1.0.5 over what I was using is that
- FreePPP displays the text from the CONNECT message the modem sends to
- the computer so I can see what's going on.
-
- In the case of the USRobotics Courier V.34 (everything) I was astonished
- to see that the connect message indicated I was using V.FC protocol
- instead of V.34 protocol when calling the Supra modems my ISP uses.
- What a surprise! So it was off to ftp://www.usr.com to locate the
- latest manual on the V.34 modem to see how I could turn V.FC off.
-
- The answer? Add the string "S56.7=1" to your setup string, and you'll
- be using V.34 instead of V.FC if you originate a call using the USR
- Courier V.34 modem. I haven't checked to see if this string is also
- valid on the Sportster or the "I" line of USR modems, but check the
- documentation (you may need to download it) for the modem you are using.
-
- I did this only this morning, so I don't have any run history on this
- change. I can say that I have been experiencing lots of strange
- disconnects before -- only time will tell if the disconnects go away.
